My greatest love in life is books, and what better way to embrace that love than to write? I love sitting down to write a chapter and finding a surprise at the end, because you never know what your characters are going to do or say. You hear writers say this all the time, and it may sound unbelievable, because how could a fictional character that really doesn’t exist – except in the writer’s mind – take control? Why that’s just utterly absurd.
Absurd as it seems, it’s true. Your characters take on a life of their own, and sometimes you really have no choice than to keep your fingers on the keyboard, hang on, and watch what happens. It’s pure magic!
I’m at that lovely time of my life called “middle age.” I use the word lovely somewhat sarcastically because let’s be honest, it really means too old to do much of anything, and certainly not something as crazy as deciding you want to be a writer when you grow up. But when I read that Alan Bradley had written his first book at age 70 (The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie), I decided I was much, much younger than that and what the heck, I should just go for it.
And that’s what I did.
